plumbing detail

I learned something Monday from Mark, my son's current helper; he did the corrective work on my plumbing rough-in and bailed me out of that bad plumbing deal so I gave him the easy work too, to kinda help make up for scut work he had to do earlier. He worked for several years behind the sales counter at my favorite plumbing supply house so he is pretty up to date on local codes and new products, etc. So he asked me if I knew about the "mechanical vent" that would save having to cut a hole in the roof? I do a lot of plumbing maintenance & repair but never touch new construction so I had no idea what he was talking about. This may be old hat to you guys, but it's a neat new trick to me. Its just a one-way vacuum release, lets air in but nothing out. I was more than willing to forego sawing a hole in the roof. I will have to install an access port of some kind when I frame the partition around the vent pipe.

mechanical vent 2

Here is how it all fits together. There will be a laundry-type sink on the outside of the partition. That puts the sink in the work area, not in the commode area. Initially it will be cold water only; later I can add a small electric heater, 20 gallons or so.

Cutter needs a "manhood" challenge thrown on him ... like he's not a real tool man if he doesn't make at least one spark from his new MM251 in his new shop by saturday no matter what it takes ... stealing power from the neighbor, tapping into the power on the pole, 100 ft extension cord from the dryer plug, just whatever ... you've got a new tool now and it shouldn't go more than a week in your possession without being tested out

That is a complete falsehood. I was buying zipcord to make an extension cord for my new welder.
You gotta bear in mind that I have been having to work lately, so the weekdays have been pretty much a washout except for gathering up enough material to keep me busy for a while.

Look at this & you'll get the idea:

And there is enough #6 SO to make a 50 ft cord for the 251. And I did a little more tool trading today; I bought a small lathe from David Baker, the air compressor guy. I saw it when I bought the CH but decided to pass on it for the time being, but I had a reason to talk to him today & decided I was going to regret it if I let it get away. Unfortunately, I haven't taken delivery & have no pictures yet but he sweetened the pot considerably with a piece of 1/2 inch plate for my welding table. It is a little over 62 inches long x 30 1/2 inches wide. Free. The picture makes it look considerably rustier than it is & it is well worth sanding at that price. Somebody tell me how much a new piece would have cost me at the current price?

Correction: I bought 8 gauge SO for the extension cord; the 6 gauge is for the groundlines to the shop.

But wait, there is more! David also pitched in this piece of catwalk, 1/8th x 1 inch strap grating for a cutting table. I didn't even measure it but it appeared to be 26 inches or so wide by about 6 feet long. I don't even remember the maker of the lathe, he said he thought it is an Atlas 6 x 18 or near that, has at least 2 chucks, faceplate, steady rest, quite a few accessories. We'll deal with all that later. Total cost - $300. The lathe will make money if I decide I don't need it.

Correction: It is an Atlas 7 x 20 lathe.

Well shoot. Today looks like a washout, a rain delay at best. Now I am not *****ing 'cuz its only rain & not a hurricane but there is water running off the roof of the house over the breaker/fuse boxes on one end & water running off the shop on the other end. I was really hoping to meet Morpheus's "manhood challenge" & at least burn a bead today but right now, looks like all bets are off - no juice, no bead.

Well cutter ... you're lathe "acquistion" definitely gets you another deserved "you suck" ... the weekends not up, you could still make some sparks tommorrow and the rain will soften the ground and make the digging easier.

Yeah Jack (& Luc), that's what I am hoping; that dirt is tough once you get a foot or so back from the dripline. Fortunately there is only 11 feet of trench to dig.
And David was planning to call me today from his shop/warehouse out in the sticks to tell me what he has on hand in the way of breaker boxes; he said he has 2 or 3 salvaged from construction sites already loaded with breakers & thought he might could save me a buck or two there. If I hear from him I will ask him to take another look at the lathe & tell me exactly what it is. Or I might persuade him to load it up, tarp it & bring it into town. I guess I could always set it on a Workmate for now. I forget that I have a couple of those things.
I can tell you one thing for sure though; this David Baker is one handy feller to know. He has spent 35 years repairing compressors and scrounging for machinery of all sorts. All of which might be meaningless were he a different sort of man but he loves doing business in a helpful way, you know? He makes sure that when you buy something from him, you get what you can use and then piles on the goodies or at the least, makes your next purchase affordable. And did I mention that he delivers it to you?
He also brings his dog Cuddles along for the ride; she is a sweetie. A man with a happy dog is very easy for me to trust, and to like.

Oh, you mean that vise? It's sitting on the porch, stubborn as ever but there has been a truce declared. See page 4 of this thread, starting at post #75 by atucker, down to end of page. I need to get it back into the diesel dunk for the interim, I suppose.

Well, I kinda got ashamed of myself for acting like a hothouse flower just because there is a little rain. So the damned ditch digging is finished at least. Hell, I grew up on an irrigation farm, didn't I? (Yes Pop, I remembered to take a putty knife so I could scrape off the sharpshooter & wash it down before I put it up.) So now the Weatherbug radar shows a possible break in the rain later this afternoon. I am not gonna stand out there trying to connect the cables in the rain but if this drizzle stops, maybe something can get accomplished before dark.
OTOH, the TT Red Raiders are playing Kansas starting right now & I still need to get another elbow from HodePo or somewhere before I can stick the 2nd cable through the wall of the shop. Danged supply house was sold out of 1 inch LB's.

Cutter, I don't know what yer complainin about, I did offer you the use of the walk behind trencher.
Don't forget, before you close the trench to install the RG59 for the cable TV to the shop, and the spare for the CCTV security camera. Hell, while yer at it, you might oughta add a 2" conduit for stuff you'll want out there in the future.

Like a Cat 5 cable for your PC/Network, a phone line, etc. etc. Of course those two you could do wireless if you're so inclined.

I'd say a "YOU SUCK" for the lathe, but how many you sucks before something happens either to the suckee or the sucker? One nice thing about this place and your long threads - if you screw up, it isn't because it hasn't been discussed. Everyone should have a "garbage gang" to to keep them honest .

Atlas lathe & breaker box

Just for the record, I edited this into the first post about the little lathe but while David was out in the country today getting me a breaker box out of his treasurehouse, he called to tell me that it is indeed an Atlas & it is a 7 x 20. He mentioned that it has quite a few accessories with it including both a 3-jaw & a 4-jaw chuck & appears to have the full complement of gears. I really screwed up by not having it delivered Friday along with the steel & he was driving his wife's car today & didn't have room to haul it.

However, he did bring me a used ITE 125 amp box already loaded with breakers, mostly 20 amp 120 volt but also one each 20, 30 & 50 amp 240 volt. I took a new SquareD with me to check my suspicion & sure enough, it fit so it can accept them or Westinghouse or Cutler Hammer new style. I think I have enough on hand to do me. I do need to do a good cleaning, mostly just dust. Cost - 30 bucks.

Easy there Cutter, all that vacuum could give you a swolen head.

Your Momma and mine are both probably sayin the same thing, "I didn't raise him to be like this, I know I raised him better." Of course that's when they ain't comparin who's kid is worse than who's kid.
