So I woke up this morning, was peacefully tending to business when I
happened to glance out my bathroom window ......
looks like old Pablo is a man of few words & more business. I had to
laugh; my head was no more than 15 feet from that old monster when he
drove it up in there. I may not sleep long but I guess I must sleep guud.

If it's like around here at Cutter's, they want 6 arms and 3 legs to put 3
phase in a residential area. Last time I heard it was over $1K.

hmmmmmmmm.
Sometime in the last couple of months, I called Xcel to asked them if
that's what that is, and if not, I wanted to know if there would be any
problem getting a 200 amp drop to the new shop. First I spent about half
an hour on hold to some distant office, being periodically assured by a
recording that "your call is important to us" & finally got a nice female
voice with an accent that I couldn't quite identify, nothing too foreign,
you understand but I suspectd that I wasn't talking to downtown Lubbock
either. She admitted that she didn't have any idea how to answer my
question and that I had reached customer service for my area - in
Wisconsin. Cut to the chase, she eventually provided me with a phone
number for a local field rep named Warren. He was like springtime; he not
only understood my questions, he even understood me. And he promised to
drive by my house and call me back later, and he did. He said there would
be no problem with the 200 amp drop but he made no mention of the 3 phase
service. I was busy at the time & didn't think to ask until we had
disconnected. Since then, I have just assumed that if it was a practical
request, he would have said something about it.
But, I still have my notes & his number and it is almost tomorrow morning,
so I will call him again. I am really intersted in hearing how they price
a 20 foot mostly vertical drop to the new building & also how much
Southwestern Electric would charge me for a 3 phase meterbase & service
entrance.
Thanks for the heads-up, Franz. It should be an interesting morning around
here.

Cutter, I think I'm seeing all kinds of 3 phase in the picture,
Transmission, primary & secondary, on what looks like 2 pole lines. Sorry
about the halfasses label job, but I ain't artistic.
Walk those poles with what I've labelled SECONDARY, and look for
transformers feeding the secondary, it shouldn't be more than a few poles.
You also want to ask Warren if you can install a 100 amp 3 phase service,
and what the voltage is. The 100 amp 3 phase will cost you a lot less to
install, and give you 2 or 300 amps of single phase depending on the
voltage.
Don't get scared if he says 480 volt, I have the Mini Substation sitting
right in the yard. You can haul it back from Binghampton.

Well guys, I think they made pretty good progress today although we did
hit a couple of snags, mostly owing to a bit of miscommunication. The
building was originally designed for a 16 ft wide overhead door. I wanted
it to match the 12 foot wide drive & bought extra framing and sheet metal
to make that work. But I suppose I misunderstood the deal because I had
Joe install the anchors for the door opening 12 feet apart; should have
been 16ft. You can see in the photo that the purling is about a foot short
of reaching the roof truss at the front of the building; it would have
reached at the 16ft mark.
So, we have the necessary steel and Pablo has his Miller Roughneck. We'll
work it out.
There are a couple of other details to work out, not according to plan but
I am too tired to type it all out now. Tune in tomorrow.

3 Phase
Warren listened, asked questions and finally said he would "talk to
engineering", then call me back, probably tomorrow (Tuesday) and let me
know what he could do about the 3 phase, but he was encouraging. He also
mentioned driving by again. Maybe I'll know something by noon or early
afternoon..... need to get my equipment chased down asap.

Cutter, don't forget to mention to Warren about that 10hp air compressor
you are plannin to install, as well as the 24" swing lathe, and how
concerned you are you might adversely effect the neighbor's TV picture
runnin them on single phase. You could also mention the Lincoln Rotary
welder you can get a deal on, and don't forget to mention Warren is always
welcome to stop by the shop if he needs a hand.
When you get approval for the 3 phase, just PM me, Shade can't handle it
and will be ballin like a baby.

I can vaguely remember a time when I kinda craved excitement in my life;
maybe some of you still do. Nowadays my life seems to rarely be without
some sort of disturbance, surprise or calamity or puzzle.
Tonight just as I was ready to turn out the lights & turn in, there was a
sudden flashing of the christmas-colored lights and an approaching clatter
of diesels, a few blasts from the airhorns. A pair of those fit-looking
young men trotted into the house diagonally across the intersection & soon
came strolling pretty casually back to the ambulance with a youngish
looking person on the gurney, a teenage boy, I'd guess. They loaded him
up, conferred briefly with the firemen and toodled off back down the
street in no particular hurry. A few minutes later the family SUV back out
of the drive & sped away & the firetruck headed back to its station.
So now I am still feeling boneweary but wide awake at the same time, all
the result of an apparent plot by the Kerry campaign people to harrass
Bush supporters. And they have the nerve to accuse the Bush campagn of
dirty tricks. Now you watch - tomorrow's headlines will be filled with
charges by
liberals trying to lay this off on Bush.

Noon, day 2
Pablo, Rudy & Jessie were here at about 7:15. Started right in on the
cable bracing & the framework squared up nicely. Pablo welded in the
extensions on the overhead door framing. Then came the floor rails to hold
the sheet metal. Next thing I knew, the skeleton was finished and the walk
doors were next. As they say, the devil is in the details: the hinges
didn't want to suck up snugly. Other than that, things are flying right
along. I'll do a little slide show & less narration now.

the deal on 3 phase
Danged if Warren Kelly didn't appear at my door. Nice guy. We went to the
alley & he gave the the bad news: cutter gets to pay for transformers if
he wants 3phase. Without some research, ballpark price $1250 minimum,
could run as much as double. 200 amp single phase drop $0. This doesn't
seem worth it to me. Besides that, the well is gonna run dry soon enough
without that expense. Sorry guys, looks like I'll have to live without the
luxury. As you can see in the photo, the lines are indeed there but I
suspect they are on their way to the TV station down the street. You can
just make out the tower to the left of the pole.

Pablo, Rudy and Jessie hung around and talked about the building quality
for few minutes this afternoon; they are pleased and a little bit
impressed. It is a real building. Pablo patted one of the rails &
commented, "this is what Building Mart uses for corner posts." We are all
smiling at each other because we all have something to be proud of. We
talked about the possibility of hanging a crane beam from the 3 posts on
each side & not having to add much in the way of re-inforcement. What I
mean is to run I-beams along the top of the north & the south walls,
suspend a trolly-mounted cross-beam from the I-beams & then hang a hoist
on a trolly on the cross beam, resulting in a 1000 lb XY hoist. The posts
look strong enough to handle it, I think. It may be prohibitively
expensive for now but you know when you keep you eye out for a while,
sometimes the needed materials appear.
This is probably my last chance to take picture through this wall of the
shop; by tomorrow night it should be covered.

It is time to pay a deserved compliment to Mueller & my salesman, Jerry
Richardson. We came up short about 2 feet of the outside door/gutter trim.
It conceals the bottom of the siding above the doors and and the edges of
the siding where it meets the doors. It also serves as a door gutter. I
called Jerry just after 5 pm, he checked for scraps & called me back
within ten minutes & said, "I'll be out in the morning but it will be
lying across my desk with a note identifying it as yours."
Thanks again, Jerry.
